Red Baraat Festival of Colors 2015

Red Baraat’s Festival of Colors celebrates the Hindu holiday of Holi, which is marked by public gatherings of families and strangers sharing songs, dance, and the exchange of ‘colors’ –colorful dry powder or colored water playfully thrown amongst the crowds of revelers.

The 2015 festival will be held:

3/5 – Washington, DC – The Howard Theater

3/6 – Cambridge, MA – The Sinclair

3/8 – Brooklyn, NY – Brooklyn Bowl

The 2015 festival will include a screening of Radhe Radhe: Rites of Holi, the film by award-winning filmmaker Prashant Bhargava with score by Grammy-nominated composer Vijay Iyer. Rupa and the April Fishes, a San Francisco-based global alternative band who are known for their blend of sounds ranging from roots to neoclassical, and the Brooklyn Raga Massive, a collective that serves to bring awareness to the rising population of independent musicians playing in the melodic framework of Indian Raga in Brooklyn.

The first Red Baraat Festival of Colors happened in 2012 at a sold out Le Poisson Rouge in New York City. Since then, the annual event has expanded to Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Boston and New Orleans. Each year, bandleader and dhol player, Sunny Jain, curates a night of music and art highlighting the South Asian Diaspora in America in a range of styles and mediums. The diversity of the line ups have included DJ Rekha, Falu and her live band (Deep Singh, Dave Sharma, Mark Tewarson, Gaurav Shah), Mandeep Sethi, Vandana Jain, Parijat Desai Dance Company, Deepa Jain’s Bellydancers and Ushka.

We are so pleased to show your NPR’s short-film of the premiere of Sunny Jain’s 100+BPM, which happened on the steps of the Brooklyn Public Library on June 21, 2014. Click the photo below to bring you to the video. We’ve re-posted NPR Producer Anastasia Tsioulcas’ All Things Considered report from June 22 here, which captured this day so well. So many people came together to make this premiere possible and we can’t overstate our gratitude to all.

From Anastasia Tsioulcas’ All Things Considered:

“We put out a call and they came — by the hundreds. When we invited wind, brass and percussion players to join us yesterday in Brooklyn to perform a world premiere byRed Baraat‘s Sunny Jain for the annual Make Music New York festival, we were hoping that lots of different kinds of musicians would join us. And boy, did they ever.
